Women in Mandera County are underserved by financial institutions and often lack the assets, collateral and business skills needed to start an enterprise. Yet when women earn an income, the benefits flow directly to children's nutrition, health and schooling.
What we did
VOPA trained six cross-border women's groups in business start-up and management skills, then equipped them with practical start-up kits:
- 6 chest deep freezers
- 6 juice dispensers
- 12 blenders
With these, the groups can produce and sell chilled drinks, juices and other products in local markets — enterprises well suited to the hot climate of northern Kenya.
Why it matters
Group enterprises spread risk, build solidarity across the border and give women a stronger voice in household and community decisions. They are also a foundation for future savings and revolving-fund schemes.
